Last month, the TCMO hosted an inspiring event for our newest graduates. If you missed it, here are the top rapid-fire business, clinical, and lifestyle tips shared by experienced practitioners to ensure a thriving, long-lasting practice.
Panelists for 2026: Courtney Cartmel, Jason Valdeavilla, Zac Lui, Anna Gao
1. Set Expectations, Book Ahead & Script Your Communication
- Map out the journey: Map out a clear expectations and treatment plan during the initial visit so patients commit to the full course of care.
- Book in advance: Always schedule the next follow-up appointment before the patient leaves to secure their spot and maintain healing momentum.
- Practice your scripts: Create scripts for patient communication for common scenarios. Practice so you can talk about things automatically and confidently in the moment.
2. Ditch the Jargon
Translate complex clinical concepts into simple, relatable language to the patient in front of you. When patients truly understand how you can help reach their health goals, compliance and trust skyrocket—leading to vastly better treatment outcomes and higher retention.
3. Pro-Tips for Independent Contractor
- Get contracts reviewed thoroughly: Always review your contracts before signing anything. Take advantage of your TCMO membership: TCMO has a lawyer who offers TCMO members complimentary consultations regarding contracts. Please note the complimentary consultation may or may not lead to an ongoing arrangement. If you’re interested, contact us and we are happy to connect both parties with an email introduction.
- Check your insurance options: Our partner malpractice insurance provider, BrokerLink, offers insurance add-ons that include consultations with a lawyer who can look over basic contract details.
- Don’t rely on clinics for marketing: Assume a clinic won’t do the marketing for you; take ownership of your own growth.
- Build referral networks: Drop by local doctors’ offices in person to introduce yourself and establish potential referral partnerships.
- Know your worth: Don’t give up, and don’t discount your services.
4. Clinical Mindset: Less is More
- Keep treatments focused: With treatments, less is more. Don’t try to do too much at once.
- Stay present: Be entirely present with your patient and with yourself.
- No assumptions: Treat the individual in front of you. Never assume or use a one-size-fits-all approach. No matter how complex it may be, move slow, and simply do the best you can.
5. Protect Your Longevity & Self-Care
You cannot pour from an empty cup. To sustain a lifelong career, your physical and mental health must be a non-negotiable priority:
- Prioritize sleep: Establish a solid sleep routine; sleep leaks accumulate and drain your clinical energy.
- Schedule breaks: Intentionally block out breaks during your shift to reset.
- Disconnect: Give yourself permission to disconnect entirely, even for just 30 minutes.
- Have a social life: Keep a life outside the clinic. Showing up as your best self directly translates to better treatment outcomes.
