Business Tip: Make the Next Step Clear

August 9, 2026

One of the simplest ways to improve patient retention is to make sure every patient understands what comes next.

As practitioners, we often know what we recommend clinically, but we do not always communicate that recommendation clearly. Telling a patient to “come back when you need to” or leaving them to decide when to book again can create uncertainty, even when continued care is appropriate.

Instead, give patients a clear roadmap. Explain what you are working on, how frequently you recommend seeing them, and when you plan to reassess their progress.

A simple framework is:

What are we working on? How often should we work on it? When will we reassess?

When appropriate, encourage patients to book their recommended appointments in advance. This makes it easier for them to follow through with their treatment plan and reduces the likelihood that busy schedules, forgotten appointments, or uncertainty interrupt their care.

This is not about pressuring patients to book more treatment. It is about making a clear clinical recommendation and helping patients understand the reasoning behind it.

Before a patient leaves, ask yourself: Do they know exactly what their next step is?

Clear recommendations create better communication, better continuity of care, and a smoother patient experience.
