Five Pillars of Membership

Why Membership Matters

Not every practitioner joins for the same reason, and that is the point. The five pillars are five honest reasons to be a member. You only need one of them to be true for you.

Political Advocacy & Regulatory Defense

“Your voice, carried straight to the decision makers.”

TCMO is the profession’s front line with government — defending the right to practice and making sure R.Acs and R.TCMPs have a seat at the table when decisions get made.

What that means for you

  • You get advance notice on Ministry of Health and regulatory changes before they land on your practice, instead of finding out after the fact.
  • Your voice reaches the people writing scope-of-practice rules, through consultations you can actually weigh in on.
  • If your right to practice is ever threatened, you are not standing alone — there is an organized, ready-to-mobilize response behind you. That is exactly what happened during the 2022 deregulation threat.
  • Your voice is included when TCMO approaches members of government on issues that affect your profession and practice.
  • TCMO maintains a respectful relationship with the CTCMPAO so your concerns are heard at the regulatory level.

Practice Legitimacy & Public Trust

“Making TCM impossible to overlook.”

Beyond government relations, TCMO works to elevate how the public and other health professions understand TCM and acupuncture as a credible part of Ontario’s healthcare system.

What that means for you

  • TCMO Day at Queen’s Park puts your profession in front of MPPs and provincial decision-makers. Even if you are not in the room, someone is there representing your interests directly.
  • When you tell a patient, doctor, or referral source you are TCMO-affiliated, it carries weight — you are backed by an organization actively recognized in Ontario’s healthcare conversation.
  • Every consultation, panel, or conference where TCMO shows up as the voice of the profession is credibility built on your behalf, so you are not establishing it patient by patient.
  • TCMO maintains relationships with associations representing other regulated health professionals in Ontario to continue supporting the TCM scope of practice.

Practice Sustainability

“More time for patients, less time on admin.”

The day-to-day support that keeps a practice running — reducing operational cost and friction so practitioners can focus on patients.

What that means for you

  • Real savings on the insurance you are required to carry anyway — a discounted BrokerLink premium that puts money back in your pocket every year.
  • Less time wrestling with practice management admin — discounted access to Noterro, PracticeBetter, and JaneApp so booking, charting, and billing are less of a drag.
  • One less thing to track yourself — help staying on top of the 45-CEU / 3-year cycle so you are not scrambling before a renewal deadline.
  • Everyday extras that add up — discounts through Perkopolis, Clover POS, and printing and wellness partners.
  • A practitioner listing in the Find a Practitioner directory on this site.

Profession Pipeline & Continuity

“A running start, right from day one.”

Investing in the next generation of practitioners, so the profession keeps growing stronger long after today’s members retire.

What that means for you

  • If you are a student or new grad, you are not starting from zero — TCMO is already at your school (Humber, AIM Academy, Eight Branches, TSTCM) introducing you to the profession before you graduate.
  • New Grad events give you real talk from practitioners who have already made the leap, plus a network of peers starting at the same point you are.
  • Small but real perks like complimentary professional headshots at the AGM — one less cost while you are building your practice presence from scratch.
  • Student membership includes exam review courses and resources to support you in establishing your clinic.

Community & Voice

“Connection for a profession built on solo practice.”

A shared identity and information channel for a profession largely made up of solo practitioners — keeping members connected and informed.

What that means for you

  • You are not practicing in isolation — the newsletter keeps you in the loop on what is happening across the profession, not just your own clinic.
  • Visibility through Member Spotlight features — exposure to a community of peers and potential referral sources.
  • A real vote in where the organization goes. AGM participation means you help elect the Board and see exactly how your membership dollars were used.

Why the pillars matter

The five pillars are not just a way to organize what TCMO does. They are how we make the case for why membership matters, to every kind of practitioner.

Every win on our record — from reversing the Bill 88 deregulation attempt to earning a place at the Alliance for Healthier Communities Conference — happened because practitioners chose to fund it together. Membership is not a transaction for services rendered. It is the fuel for the next fight, the next consultation response, the next room TCMO gets invited into.

Some practitioners are drawn in by advocacy. Others care most about legitimacy — being part of a profession taken seriously by regulators, insurers, and the public. Some want membership to pay for itself through the everyday support that makes running a clinic easier. Others are here for the pipeline, mentoring students and making sure this profession has a future. And for many it is simply community, staying connected to a profession that can otherwise feel like a lot of people working alone.

All of it is real value, and all of it is the same organization. Whichever door you walk in through, joining TCMO becomes an obvious yes.
